Decks and pergolas in Perth

Hardwood decks, timber pergolas and patio roofs that make the backyard part of the house. Built on solid footings, fixed properly and finished to last in the Perth sun.

The work

What I do

Outdoor timber has a hard life here. Sun, salt air near the coast and winter rain all take their toll. I start with the frame and footings, use timber and fixings made for outdoor work, and finish the boards so they keep looking good.

Every backyard is different. I’ve built decks around trees, pergolas with festoon lighting and patio roofs over paved areas. We work out the size, height and look together before anything is ordered.

  • Timber decks. Hardwood and treated pine decks, at ground level or raised, oiled to finish.
  • Pergolas. Freestanding or attached timber pergolas, open-beam or roofed.
  • Patio roofs. Covered areas over paving so you can use the space all year.
  • Privacy screens. Timber batten screens and fence extensions.
  • Garden sheds and small builds. Sheds, planters and storage that suit the yard.
  • Deck repairs. Loose boards replaced, tired frames fixed and decks re-oiled.

Questions

Common questions

Do I need council approval for a deck or pergola?

It depends on the size, height and where it sits on your block. Many small, low structures don’t, but larger or attached ones often do. I’ll flag it early so you can check with your council.

Which timber is best for a deck?

Hardwoods like merbau and jarrah look great and last well outdoors. Treated pine costs less and suits frames and budget decks. I’ll go through the options with you.

How often should a deck be oiled?

In Perth, usually every 6 to 12 months depending on how much sun it gets. Regular oiling stops the boards drying out and going grey.

Can you build a deck around a tree?

Yes. I frame around the trunk and leave room for it to grow and move.
